Is Panerai Better Than Rolex?

  • March 12, 2020
  • 4 minute read

If you’re torn between buying a Panerai watch and a Rolex watch, you may need a little help in comparing the similarities and differences between the two watch brands. Rolex and Panerai have a history that is linked since they formed a partnership during the 1930s. Panerai was working closely with the Royal Italian Navy and wanted to draw upon the expertise of Rolex’s waterproofing technology.

Since then, both watch brands have gained global recognition for creating high-end timepieces that are loved for their durability, their waterproof qualities, and their distinct bold-looking aesthetics. But which brand is best? Panerai or Rolex? The question can be answered in several ways, some of which we highlight in this comparison guide.

Which brand is more widely known, Rolex or Panerai?

You don’t have to be a watch expert to know that Rolex is the more widely known brand out of the two. In fact, it’s one of the most recognized in the entire watch industry. So, choosing between a Rolex and a Panerai watch depends on whether you want to be recognized for wearing a top-end status symbol or not.

Many collectors will invest and wear a Rolex watch as a statement piece because they like the remarks and comments that others make when they see a Rolex on the wrist. Other collectors appreciate the subtlety of a less recognized watch brand and will invest their money in companies that create a talking point.

They may still deliver that high-end feel, albeit in a somewhat modest way. That said, there’s nothing wrong with a big brand name, and Rolex has reason to be proud of creating a huge portfolio of reliable, robust, and highly technical wristwatches.

Are Rolex watches more investible that Panerai watches?

Rolex watches

It’s not uncommon for a watch to hold its value on the second-hand market, especially if manufactured by a prestigious brand like Rolex or Panerai. Despite people commonly thinking that gold Rolex watches will be the most valuable as an investment, the company’s stainless steel models will always be high in demand. This is mainly for their ease of wear, their robustness and their classic look, which will pair well with most attire. Panerai watches also hold their value very well, particularly a Panerai Luminor.

To answer the question, Rolex watches do hold their value well. You can’t always know for sure, however, if a watch will be appreciated in years to come, so choosing between a Panerai or a Rolex watch should, in fact, come from the heart. While Rolex is one of the best investment watch brands around, Panerai watches are made in particularly small numbers.

Combined with the fact that some models have gained an almost cult-like following, Panerai watches are considered highly desirable. The best investment watch from the brand is certainly the diver friendly, cushion-shaped Panerai Luminor Marina. There are certain opportunities where you can pick up a preowned Rolex or Panerai watch for significantly less than a brand new one.

Panerai vs. Rolex quality comparison:

Both Panerai and Rolex make excellent watches, make no mistake about it. We’ve created a quick guide to the most iconic models created by Rolex and Panerai so you can get an idea for how both brands make use of high-tech materials and cutting-edge technology to create their noteworthy designs.

Iconic watches by Rolex:

The Submariner: known for its resistance to water and corrosion, the Submariner is Rolex’s most popular model. The watch was introduced in 1954 and is part of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual line, featuring a middle case from one monobloc piece of 904L steel.

The Cosmograph Daytona: This mechanical wristwatch was created for racing drivers. It measures elapsed time and calculates average speed. Its name refers to Daytona in Florida, where, during the 20th century, the racing industry grew tremendously.

The Datejust: this is the brand’s classic dress watch, born in 1945. It was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch and is characterized by a simple three-handed dial display, a date window at 3 o’clock, and comfortable sizes of 36mm or 41mm for the gent’s wrist.

Iconic watches by Luminor:

Panerai Luminor Marina: this watch was developed for the Italian Royal Navy and has since been modified with the P. 9010 movement, which provides a power reserve of three days.

The Luminor Radiomir: When Panerai patented their luminous substance, Radiomir, in 1916, it became a hallmark to their diving watch designs, enabling divers of the Italian Royal Navy to see underwater.

The Luminor GMT: Perfect for the avid traveler, the GMT version of the Panerai Luminor features a GMT hand cased inside the recognizable characteristics of the 1950’s Luminor design.

What makes it hard to decide between a Rolex and a Panerai watch is the fact that both brands create diver’s watches. Whereas Panerai is renowned for creating larger, bolder and bulkier watches, Rolex has produced hundreds of its own calibers and has combined these with its expertise in water resistance from a very early age.

Luminor became well-known at a much later date than Rolex but that by no means makes their watches any less reliable. Created in true Italian style, Panerai watches boast a “larger than life” look, so if you like your watch to create a huge wrist presence, a Panerai watch may be for you. Alternatively, Rolex watches have a distinct style and an array of timepieces that are perfect for wearing as dress watches. So, it does come down to personal choice, style, and features when choosing between a Panerai watch or a Rolex watch.
